Choosing a Plumber
How to Find a Reliable Plumber in Cheam
Published 17 September 2025 by WDI Group (Surrey) Ltd
Finding a plumber you can trust matters more than most home services decisions, because you're often letting someone into your house to deal with something urgent. A poor choice can mean shoddy work, unclear pricing, or worse.
Here's what's actually worth checking before you book someone for plumbing, heating or gas work in Cheam and the surrounding area, along with the kind of questions that separate a genuinely reliable tradesperson from someone who just sounds confident on the phone.
Check registrations that actually matter
Any plumber working on gas appliances must be Gas Safe registered — this is a legal requirement, not a nice-to-have. You can check an engineer's registration number directly on the Gas Safe Register website. For general plumbing work, ask about public liability insurance, which protects you if something goes wrong on the job.
It's also worth asking whether the company has membership of a relevant trade body for other specialisms, such as refrigeration or air conditioning work if that's what you need. A firm that's happy to give you registration numbers unprompted is generally a good sign.
Understand pricing before you agree to anything
- Ask whether there's a call-out charge on top of the hourly rate
- Check if rates differ for evenings, weekends or bank holidays
- Find out the minimum charge period and how time is billed after that
- Get an idea of likely cost for the specific job, not just a generic hourly figure
- Ask whether parts are charged separately and whether you'll be told the cost before they're fitted
Look for clear, local information
A plumber who publishes their rates, company details and registration numbers openly has nothing to hide. Look for a proper business address, a landline number, and reviews that mention specific jobs rather than vague praise.
A registered company number and a clear statement of who actually operates the business is a reasonable thing to expect too — a plumber working under a clearly identifiable company, with an office address rather than just a mobile number, tends to be easier to hold accountable if anything does go wrong.
What good communication looks like
- A rough time window for arrival, with a call if they're running late
- A clear explanation of the problem and the options for fixing it
- An upfront cost or estimate before work starts, not after
- A written invoice for anything beyond a very small job
- A willingness to explain what they found and why they're recommending a particular fix, rather than just presenting a bill
Questions worth asking before you book
- Can you give me a rough idea of cost over the phone based on what I've described?
- Do you charge a call-out fee, and is there a minimum charge?
- Are you Gas Safe registered if the job involves a boiler or gas appliance?
- Do you offer any kind of guarantee on the work carried out?
Local knowledge counts
Cheam and the surrounding areas have a mix of housing stock, from older properties with original pipework to newer builds with combi boilers and modern plastic plumbing. A plumber who regularly works across Cheam, Sutton, Epsom and Worcester Park will have seen the particular quirks of local housing and be quicker to diagnose problems as a result.
This local familiarity also tends to mean a better understanding of common issues in the area, such as hard water scale build-up or root ingress into older clay drains, which can shorten the time it takes to get from symptom to diagnosis.
