Autumn is the busiest time of year for boiler servicing, as everyone has the same idea at once. Booking in September or October, before the rush, means you're not waiting weeks for an appointment once the weather turns and everyone else has the same idea.

Bleed your radiators

Check each radiator heats evenly across its whole surface, and bleed any that are cold at the top. This is a quick job that makes a real difference to how efficiently your system heats the house once you start using it more heavily.

Insulate exposed pipework

• Lag any pipework in lofts, garages or under suspended floors, where it's exposed to cold air
• Pay particular attention to the boiler's external condensate pipe, a common source of frozen boilers in winter
• Check outside taps are insulated or, ideally, isolated for winter if not needed

Check your system pressure and controls

• Confirm boiler pressure sits within the manufacturer's recommended range
• Test your thermostat and any smart heating controls are working correctly
• Check thermostatic radiator valves aren't stuck in one position after months unused

Make sure you know where your stopcock is, keep your boiler's make and model noted somewhere accessible, and have a plan for who to call if the boiler does fail during cold weather. A little preparation now avoids scrambling for information during an actual breakdown.

What an engineer actually inspects during a pre-winter service

A boiler service isn't just a quick glance at the display. An engineer will typically check the burner and heat exchanger for signs of scale or sooting, test the flue for safe operation, check the gas pressure and burner combustion, inspect the condensate trap and pipework, test all the safety devices that shut the boiler down in a fault condition, and check the overall system pressure and any visible pipework for leaks or corrosion. Catching a worn component in October, when parts can usually be sourced quickly, is far less stressful than discovering the same fault mid-January during a cold spell when everyone else is booking in too.

A step-by-step winter prep checklist

If your boiler does fail during winter

Even with good preparation, boilers can still fail. If yours does, check the pressure gauge and fault code first, since these often point straight to the cause, and check whether an external condensate pipe has frozen if the weather has been particularly cold. If the fault is beyond a simple pressure top-up or you're not confident, it's best left to a Gas Safe registered engineer rather than attempting further DIY diagnosis, particularly on anything involving the burner, flue or gas components.
