Here's what registration means in practice, and why it's worth checking before letting anyone near a gas appliance in your home.
What Gas Safe registration actually is
Gas Safe Register is the official body that maintains the legal register of gas engineers qualified to work safely on gas appliances and installations in the UK. It replaced CORGI registration in 2009 and is a legal requirement, not a voluntary accreditation scheme.

What Gas Safe registration covers, and what it doesn't
Registration is broken down into categories, such as boilers, cookers, gas fires or commercial catering equipment, and an engineer is only qualified to carry out the specific categories listed against their name. This is why it's worth checking the register rather than assuming any Gas Safe engineer is automatically qualified for every type of gas appliance. A domestic boiler engineer, for example, may not be registered to work on a commercial catering gas installation, and vice versa.
